Serves: 1 wife

Prep time: 5 years

Ready in: 3 months

Ingredients:

1 Wife with interest in running

1 Supporting family

1 Running event registration (Shamrocks and Shenanigans 5k in Ann Arbor)

1 Treadmill

Preparation:

Dismiss your wife’s wish to purchase a treadmill for home use for years. Make sure that you do not show any sign of changing your opinion. Whenever she brings up the topic, always make sure to make the following comment: “If you really want to run, then just go outside and start running…”

Directions:

  1. Start running yourself and realize what a great, life changing activity it is
  2. Move to Michigan before winter time and realize, that during winter there will be many occasions when there will be weather conditions that are dangerous for running
  3. Wait until your wife brings up again the “Let’s purchase a treadmill question” so at least it is not you who is pushing for it (what a not so great idea…)
  4. Finally agree to purchase one, but make sure you make a comment: “But if you are not going to use it… then I will”
  5. Do your research online as well as try the different treadmills in the local sport equipment stores and make sure you finally purchase one
  6. Make sure you are supportive when she finally starts using the treadmill
  7. Encourage her to run outside at least once a week to experience the difference between running on the pavement vs running on the treadmill
  8. Talk about her concerns about running outside (“What if I cannot run a full lap?”, “What if I will not be able to run fast?”, “What if everyone will think that I am running funny?”, etc.) – a run together might even offer a new source of motivation for you

  9. Be ready to alter your running schedule to accommodate hers, so she feels comfortable during her first few runs outside, even if it makes you want to run again immediately
  10. Help her to discuss her concern, that she can run 5k in around 27 minutes on the treadmill, but a bit slower when running outside
  11. After recognizing that you cannot keep up with her during a half mile long sprint at the end of a 3.1M (5k) training run, sign her up for a 5k race (Shamrocks and Shenanigans 5k in Ann Arbor)

This is a great local event!

  12. Cheer loudly from the sidewalk at the race start

Look how happy she is as the race started: waving and smiling

FYI: She completed the 3.1 miles in 25:22! She finished 8th place in her age group, otherwise 282nd out of 2038 runners. I would call it a great start for a running career… (First race 3 months after started running!)
